Arashi's Ohno Satoshi's fans hurl abuse at Morinaga! "Strange" "Scary" and cold words

On July 29, Morinaga Chocolate tweeted this on its official Twitter account:

People brought up specific points they could improve on, like the packaging and amount of chocolate, but most replies were by enthusiastic Ohno fans:

  • "I stopped eating it after Ohno-san stopped doing the CMs"
  • "Ohno-san stopped doing the CMs so I stopped buying it"
  • "Why I stopped buying BAKE, does it even need to be asked? Because Ohno-san stopped doing the CMs. Please call for Ohno-kun again. It will sell like crazy."
Ohno endorsed the product from April 2014 to May 2016.

There was also criticism towards the product:

  • "I bought it because Ohno-kun was in the CMs, it's not like it was particularly tasty"
  • "Ohno-kun was doing the CMs so I bought as many as I could, but it's not yummy enough that I would keep buying it"
  • "Expensive compared to the amount you get. But I still bought it because Ohno-san was in charge of the CMs".

"Speaking of Ohno commercials, from October 2014 to 2016 he also starred in Morinaga's Milk Cocoa commercials. In October 2017, however, Sakurai Sho, also of Arashi, began starring in new commercials for the same product. It seems Sakurai's commercial deal is still ongoing. Some fans feel that since Ohno promoted the product first, Sakurai stole his place:

  • "Ever since they changed the Cocoa commercial promoter to another member, I've stopped buying Morinaga"
  • "After Cocoa changed to a member of the same group, I stopped trusting the company"
  • "There's that Cocoa CM thing too, now I don't buy anything from Morinaga"

The pent-up resentment came out in the replies." (Reporter who is well-informed about Johnny's)

Arashi fans seeing these negative responses expressed discomfort:

  • "Way too rude. As a fellow Arashi fan, I'm embarrassed"
  • "They're dragging Ohno-kun's name through the mud"
  • "If you say things like that publicly, they'll think 'Ohno Satoshi has troublesome fans so it's difficult to use him' 'I'm glad we didn't hire him'. Think a little harder before you speak guys."

Fans were concerned that people would think it was "unethical that they were verbally abusing a company because the talent they support isn't promoting its product anymore", and that they were "projecting a strange image to the general public and to businesses." Twitter users who are not Arashi fans actually were shocked and taken aback by it:

  • "So many 'Not buying because you switched Ohno-kun out for another member' responses. Really surprised"
  • "The replies on that tweet are scary. Johnny's fans have this side to them"
  • "So many people aren't buying it because Arashi's Ohno-kun isn't doing the CMs anymore. Huge culture shock. Must be tough for the confectionery company."

On the 30th, Morinaga expressed thanks for the incredible number of responses and said "It appears there was a bit of a debate but we don't mind at all if your reason is that the promoting talent changed. It is all the result of our lack of effort. We'll keep taking your responses until we run out of money [to give out for the campaign]!" Fans reacted favourably towards Morinaga who gave a "mature response" in the mountain of savage responses.

"As many people fear, if the troublesome Ohno fans continue to run wild, companies may get the impression that it is risky to work with Ohno. Arashi currently appear in 5 commercials, individually, Ohno appears in two: Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical's "Allegra FX" and J-Oil Mills' "Ajinomoto Olive Oil Extra Virgin". Individually, Sakurai and Aiba Masaki appear in six, Ninomiya Kazunari in five, and Matsumoto Jun in four. Despite having the fewest individual commercials among the members, some fans continue to throw accusations towards Morinaga in regards to Sakurai's connection to it. Because of this, we cannot deny the possibility that his commercial deals from now on will decrease. Would it not make the talent happier if fans used their enthusiasm to support his current CM deals instead of directing it towards Morinaga?" (Same reporter who is well-informed about Johnny's)

So bitter I laughed

12. [+1609 / -7]
Don't they know how damaging it is to his image when they keep using his name like this.

13. [+1025 / -48]
Well, if they chose him to do the commercials, they were aiming for his fans to buy the product.
It's natural this would happen.

14. [+317 / -22]
Doesn't make a difference who appears in the CMs

15. [+969 / -10]
Ohno-kun used to do the CMs so I'll keep buying it!!
Like hell that would happen

I thought "Strange" and "Scary" was about Ohno's facial expression.

I don't understand people who buy something they don't even like because their favourite celebrity is in the commercial.
Does he get a percentage of the sale?
Not likely.

But it'll affect whether they'll want to renew the contract, won't it?

But when someone you hate is in a CM, the urge to buy disappears, right?

241. [+60 / -0]

Because figures are important for that celebrity's future work...
Sales are important!

274. [+61 / -1]
It might be because if it sells well, the company will want to use him for other commercials.

19. [+489 / -15]
I'm a Johnny's fan but I don't understand the guys who do this. I seriously don't want to be lumped together with them.

20. [+367 / -15]
Girls Channel has a lot of Ohno-kun supporters but
The fans on Twitter are scary
And a lot of them are also Kishi (King & Prince) fans so it's scarier.

21. [+566 / -9]
He probably wants to quit because of things like this.

22. [+429 / -18]
The slanderers are idiots.
I feel sorry for Ohno-kun.
Think about Ohno-kun's feelings.

23. [+255 / -4]
So now they know the real reason sales declined

24. [+595 / -17]
You work hard to enter a big company, you develop a product, it starts to sell. And then you hear "[it sold] because of [talent]." That would demotivate you, yeah?

25. [+192 / -174]
I hate Ohno so I'm glad they got him to stop doing the CMs

26. [+34 / -81]
BAKE was never yummy
It was just fans buying it

27. [+242 / -41]
Ohno-kun should be warning those fans [of their behaviour]

28. [+475 / -11]
Yeah, that'd make you want to retire...
Ohno-kun, keep at it for just a bit longer.

30. [+303 / -3]
I don't know if you should be thankful to the fans or scared of them.

"Ohno-kun was doing the CMs so I bought as many as I could..."

What an idiot

That sentence sounded so stupid LOL

35. [+260 / -4]
I thought Ohno-kun had done something
That title is confusing

36. [+127 / -4]
Are they really fans?

37. [+30 / -46]
I don't think type of thing isn't limited to Ohno fans though
Morinaga went the self-deprecating route, that's why they got backlash.

115. [+14 / -15]
>>37
I think so too.
They didn't have to make such a weird survey lol

It's not even limited to food, the effectiveness of any commercial depends on the talent that's promoting it...

[The article writer] just wants to bash Johnny-wotas

38. [+295 / -26]
If sales plummeted just because Ohno's fans stopped buying it, doesn't that mean it wasn't yummy to start with?

39. [+162 / -41]
Johnny-wotas really are stupid
I get why people call them 'the gathering of cr○zies'.

40. [+160 / -9]
First make a yummy product that can sell without a commercial.

42. [+145 / -23]
If it was any other Johnny, everyone would be bashing Johnny's but here, everyone's like 'I feel so bad for Ohno-kun'. Girls Channel is, of course, unfair.

50. [+36 / -91]
Cute

51. [+115 / -38]
If they had, for instance, worded it like "Bring Ohno-kun back, idioooot!" I'd agree that it's verbal abuse, but if they put it like "When it's not Ohno-kun in the CM, the product loses its appeal", the company can use this opinion for future reference.

They even tweeted "We don't mind at all if your reason is that the promoting talent changed."
