Aoyama Gosho (55), author of the popular manga Detective Conan, appeared on a Nippon TV talk show on the 24th this month.
This year is Detective Conan's 25th year of serialisation. When asked about the reason for Detective Conan's popularity, Aoyama answered with a face of wonder, "I don't know." He revealed, when Detective Conan first started, "I thought that it would end in 3 months." Even Aoyama himself is surprised by the outcome.
During this long serialisation, Aoyama has been particular about two things: "Conan-kun does not cry" and "There is no complicity." The latter may appear to be a rather difficult limitation for a story with a detective setting, but Aoyama avoids such scenarios as "the story will become convoluted."
Furthermore, the story has gone through rapid plot progression as of late, including development of the protagonist, Kudo Shinichi and the heroine, Ran's romantic relationship, and significant Black Organisation revelations, causing a sensation online. Bearing in mind that 96 volumes have been sold to date, Aoyama was asked, "What are your plans for the 100th volume? Will the story move?" Aoyama gave an insinuative answer, "Volume 100 is a good place [to leave off]." And also dropped a bomb, "The ending* has already been decided."
*オチ (ochi) means outcome, final result, the end, the punchline
He also revealed that he gets together with two people of the editorial team once a month, and they spend an endless 12 hours thinking up the trick for the case. They have continued this same routine for 25 years.

It seems like it's going to be very hard to come up with an unpredictable ending...
But I can't wait!

Calm down
3. [+2102 / -38]
Are you serious?
It dragged too much so I quit halfway through
4. [+1820 / -18]
Will Ran's role in the story disappear, I wonder.
5. [+1445 / -61]
Then do us a favour and finish it right away
6. [+1696 / -73]
Sorry to all the fans
But it sounds like a lie
Seems like he'll tediously drag out the ending
7. [+1039 / -20]
So he's going to cleanly end it in 4 volumes?
8. [+1596 / -15]
Finish it before I die, okay?
9. [+1108 / -25]
Even so, Kudo
*Kansai dialect - Phrase Hattori often says to show that he doesn't agree with Kudo's opinion.

If a new volume comes out every 3~4 months, then it'll end in one year...?
12. [+3753 / -29]
I know what the ending will be too.
Conan will turn back into Shinichi→At first, Ran will be delighted and cry→But then she realises that if Conan is Shinichi then it means that Shinichi saw her naked when they had baths together→Ran punches or kicks Shinichi. THE END
14. [+666 / -12]
It'll end in 2020, right?
15. [+1235 / -13]
It's a money maker so the author and publishers won't let it end.
16. [+1219 / -4]
Even if it ends, it's seems they'll release lots of extras from so-and-so's POV afterwards.
17. [+1422 / -17]
Everything was Shinichi's premeditated crime...! That won't be the punchline, will it? w
18. [+1078 / -6]
Detective Conan's so long
I like it but Detective Conan was the best during its cell animation days.
19. [+1632 / -11]
Such a profitable money tree, all the people involved are probably not going to let go and let it end. The author's the one who wants to quickly end it the most, don't you think?
20. [+562 / -28]
If you change their hair, everyone has the same face w
21. [+931 / -6]
If he doesn't end it quickly, the death count's gonna keep increasing
22. [+2298 / -51]
Detective Conan started when I was in elementary school. I'm already 33...
End it already!
24. [+1678 / -26]
Gets punched by Gin in volume 1 and becomes a vegetable
↓
Conan and so on is all Shinichi's dream
LMAO if that's the punchline.
26. [+898 / -13]
I've collected up to volume 92 so I'll try to complete the whole collection.
Please end it at the 100th volume for real.

The tricks impress me every time. It's amazing how he managed to come out with new stories for 25 years.
- [+67 / -2]
That trick where the criminal jumped from the roof of a building to the balcony of the apartment next door like Tarzan was especially terrible.
Even Jackie Chan would die if he attempted a stunt like that, and everyone will notice him doing it too.
- [+50 / -3]
Please stop making so many villains left-handed.
- [+61 / -6]
I thought that it was amazing how he could draw a detective story by himself without an author* but
*Separate person to think up the story
As expected, it's impossible for him do everything (from storyboard to drawing) by himself for 25 years.
So he thought up the stories with the editorial team, huh. That's not cheating or anything, and it makes sense.
The thing I agree with the most is the author's answer "Don't really know" to the question "Why is Detective Conan so popular?" lol
Starting from when I was still a kid, I would occasionally pick up a volume to read, or watch an episode or two but
I never got addicted to it the same way as I did with Kindaichi.
In recent years, Conan has had an explosion of fans, mostly females. I'm slightly baffled by how strangely worked up and excited they get.
(Of course, fans are free to enjoy things however they please.)

To be honest, lately, there's been an increase of stories that make you think, "You killed someone because of that?"

>To be honest, lately, there's been an increase of stories that make you think, "You killed someone because of that?"
I'm afraid to say, it's not just "lately"

The misunderstanding that shine = 死ね (Die!, pronounced shi-ne)* is reaching way too far
But, that's what's good about it
*Person's boyfriend wrote her a note saying shine (meaning she's bright like the light). She interpreted it as 'go die' and committed suicide. Boyfriend then became a serial killer and murdered most of her family because he thought they killed her.

So long as the movies are hits, he's not going to be allowed to end the story in a way that the story can't be continued commercially.
4. [+819 / -26]
I think he should end Conan vs. Black Organisation at around 120 volumes, and have irregular releases of stories about Detective Shinichi. That way, they should be able to keep making movies.
5. [+797 / -36]
Being able to think up ideas and maintain his motivation for 25 years deserves respect.
6. [+553 / -17]
Unless a newcomer appears and creates a hit that can replace Conan, he won't be allowed to end it even if he wants to...
Aoyama-sensei isn't in perfect health, and he probably wants to draw Kaito Kid but he's not in the position where he's allowed to do so...
7. [+484 / -12]
I'll buy the last volume.
At first, when I was still in elementary, I would always look forward to the next volume but now that over twenty years has passed, I am waiting for the last volume to come out.

When I watch Detection Conan, the thing that crosses my mind is: 'from not knowing what a cell phone is, you've suddenly started using a smart phone?' They're using the Sazae-san formula* but, in my head I'm thinking, technology advanced that quickly in a few months...?
*Time doesn't pass in Sazae-san
