Shukan Bunshun Reports on King & Prince's Iwahashi Genki's Brush-in with the Law

King & Prince's Iwahashi Genki's Resumption of Activities was Cancelled Due to a Brush-in with the Law at a Harajuku Convenience Store

"A few days ago, we reported that Iwahashi Genki would be resuming some of his entertainment activities, but at this time, he will no longer be able to resume his activities as previously stated. He will continue to concentrate on treatment for his panic disorder."

This is one portion of the statement released by Johnny & Associates on February 28, 2019.

This was a statement regarding Iwahashi Genki (22), a member of the up-and-coming Johnny & Associates group King & Prince, who made their CD debut in May last year. Iwahashi went on hiatus in October last year due to poor health. On February 17 this year, it was announced that he would be resuming activities, however, on February 28, merely eleven days later, his agency reported that his resumption of activities had been cancelled.

"In a patrol car with a male foreigner and a policeman"

In actuality, in this "vacuum of eleven days", Iwahashi was involved in a brush with the law.

"On the night of February 19, Kinpuri's Iwahashi-kun got into a patrol car with a male foreigner and a policeman." (Person from nearby restaurant)

On this day, Iwahashi visited a convenience store in the metropolitan area to purchase alcohol with several friends.

"Iwahashi was buying alcohol at a convenience store near Harajuku Station. It was then. Maybe it's because he looks young -- the store clerk asked for his ID to confirm his age. It seems Iwahashi-kun took offense to the store clerk's attitude, he suddenly flew into a rage and lashed out at the store clerk. Maybe he lost his cool because the clerk didn't know that he's a celebrity and a Johnny's talent..." (Iwahashi's acquaintance)

It grew into an argument and the police officer who responded to the [store clerk's] 110 call escorted them to the police station. Iwahashi left the police station early morning the following day. He was given a stern warning and his parents were apparently called to the police station in the middle of the night to be his guarantors.

"He'll take large amounts of medication with alcohol"

It wasn't just this day, as a matter of fact, while on rest, Iwahashi frequently entertains himself by having drinking parties with friends.

"Iwahashi-kun isn't concentrating on treatment at all. He's just been barhopping. On February 9, he went out drinking with friends at "PUB", a British pub in Kyoto.

What worries me is when he'll take large amounts of medication with alcohol. He washes down more than ten pills at once. I don't know what kind of medication it is but he told me, "I can't get enough from one hospital so I go around to other hospitals." Even when others are worried about his health and try to stop him, he just says, "I want to take medication with alcohol!", and doesn't stop." (A different acquaintance of Iwahashi's)

"Alcohol is said to trigger panic attacks"

Panic disorder specialist, Dr. Shioiri Toshiki, the head of the psychiatric department at Gifu University Hospital, explains.

"Alcohol is said to trigger panic attacks, so during treatment one should refrain from alcohol. It is important to get plenty of nutrients and sleep, and to lead a regular life. Of course, medication must also be taken properly."

When asked to confirm the truth about this series of disturbances, Johnny & Associates gave this reply:

"Iwahashi, who is receiving treatment for panic disorder, became nervous and flustered due to the unexpected questions from the convenience store staff. We are deeply sorry for any inconvenience he may have caused. However, Iwahashi was actually called in for police questioning as a witness for his friend who had conflict with the staff, and was not in a situation where he required a guarantor. He was not in a mentally stable condition due to the incident, so he had his parents come to retrieve him."

From what is written in the article,
Rather than panic disorder... isn't it [alcohol/dɾᴜg] dependence?
Wouldn't it be better for him to be properly treated at a hospital or an institution?

He's still young, I pray that he doesn't get arrested over something trivial.

2. [+8003 / -859]
It's probably tough for him when life doesn't go the way he expects but the members who are waiting for him will probably be shocked when they hear about this...

3. [+8817 / -1534]
What's written in Bunshun's paid article is quite different.
The foreigner who was with him started filming and didn't listen to Iwahashi when he told him to stop [filming]. And that's why the shop keeper called the police. He was just accompanying a foreigner who couldn't speak Japanese.
The free article omits details and distorts the truth, and only writes things that will negatively affect Iwahashi-kun. That's Bunshun for you.

[+633 / -81]
That's horrible

[+521 / -73]
Bunshun even went as far as to make it seem like they had fake IDs, this kind on misleading way of writing is common practice for them. That's why you shouldn't believe weekly magazines*.
*Shūkanshi, a Japanese term for any weekly magazine, including tabloid newspapers.

[+475 / -65]
It's a trashy third-rate magazine, after all.

[+354 / -53]
The usual ploy. Money-making.

[+363 / -425]
LOL at these Johnny-wotas desperately trying to defend him.

[+417 / -106]
Bunshun are horrible, aren't they? Because of this free article, people are misunderstanding.

[+248 / -106]
What are you trying to say?
That the article is false and Iwahashi is a good person?

[+188 / -235]
Reading things like paid articles, how hungry for gossip ARE you?
That's Yahoo commenters for you.

[+415 / -36]
What Bunshun writes in their free and paid articles is different every single time LMAO. They use this underhanded method to get people to read the paid article. They always do this.

With another talent, the title of the free article was something like "Got drunk and in police custody", but the paid article's title was "Talent looks after drunkard and hands him over to police".
The free article is written in a negative way to lure you into reading the paid article.

[+397 / -28]
I read the paid article

Asked to confirm age, Iwahashi flies into a rage, fight with store clerk

Foreigner with him starts recording the fight

Store clerk tells them to stop recording
Iwahashi also tells foreigner to stop recording

Store clerk calls police

The sequence of events is the same as the free one.

In this digital age, it's impossible to tell what's true and what's false.
What a horrible time to live in

5. [+2080 / -92]
Panic disorder is an illness of the heart, right?
If he doesn't get treatment quickly, he'll do something irreversible.

[+214 / -7]
This is the type of article that will mislead people who don't know about panic disorder into thinking it's something that will cause you to become nervous and get violent when you encounter something unexpected.

6. [+1973 / -157]
If this is the truth, then he has betrayed the members and fans that have been waiting for his return.
If he did this because he doesn't want to return, then he should quit Johnny's.
It's bad to take any medication with alcohol, in the worse case scenario, you may end up endangering your life, so hold back on the alcohol.

If you can't stop yourself from drinking alcohol, you should check yourself into a hospital and get treatment.

Iwahashi's finished!

You were faking your illness, huh.

6. [+2644 / -152]
Apparently, the real story is different.

7. [+2618 / -64]
I'm a convenience store clerk too so I understand how the store clerk feels.

8. [+2994 / -202]
Is it okay for him to drink alcohol while he's receiving treatment?

10. [+2559 / -53]
If this is true, what the hell are you doing Iwahashi...

13. [+2996 / -234]
I see the name Kinpuri all the time, but I can't remember a single face.

Comes from Bunshun
Bunshun can't be trusted

18. [+3291 / -33]
I feel bad for him that he's being pursued by Bunshun even though he has a panic disorder but it's dangerous to take large amounts of medication with alcohol so he should really stop.

27. [+2992 / -129]
Is this true?

キンプリ岩橋玄樹「活動再開」に待ったをかけた“原宿コンビニ警察沙汰”

Tweet Translation:
Coming from an outsider, I only glanced at the video, I was wavering over whether to say this or not but, judging from what Iwahashi-kun was saying in English, it's clear to me that the person causing trouble was his foreign friend, and he was mediating between his friend and the shop keeper who couldn't speak English.

Yet his fans are swallowing Bunshun's click-bait article, and talking as if he refused to show identification and caused trouble. It's too painful to watch. You are free to interpret the article however you like, but it's also important to understand what the article has made their bait and who they are trying to prey. The prey is probably not the people in the video, but the readers.

31. [+2882 / -62]
What's written in the paid article is completely different.
Bunshun is nasty.
They're doing anything they can to divert the attention away from Akimoto's scandal.

32. [+3158 / -33]
In the paid video, his foreigner friend was fighting with the shopkeeper over stopping the recording, and Iwahashi was mediating.

How did they turn that into this article?

35. [+1231 / -55]
As if I'll believe Bunshun

46. [+1045 / -49]
Iwahashi's an idiot to hang out with a friend like that.
His friend sold the video

58. [+265 / -129]
Since the police are involved, this is probably true

81. [+874 / -35]
>>58
True or not, the paid article says that it was Iwahashi's friend who caused trouble.
The free article's completely different
Bunshun are trash
It's slander

62. [+374 / -103]
Kinpuri wota's are so lenient on Kinpuri
Yet they're so cold when other celebs have some run in with the police.

80. [+666 / -9]
It's not clear whether Iwahashi fought with the shop assistant or not. In the paid video Iwahashi appears to be stopping his angry friend.
But, if the part that he's taking medicine with alcohol and taking more medicine than the amount prescribed, is true, then he should stop! It's bad for his health.
