I Don't Think Japanese Movies Are Interesting

I like movies so I'm subscribed to a movie channel and often watch movies in my free time. I occasionally watch Japanese films but Japanese films tend to have lots of meaningless scenes and the voices are abnormally quiet, so I always give up watching half way.
Some Western films are boring or don't match my tastes but it's almost never these reasons that make me stop watching Japanese films.
Do you dislike Japanese films?

2. [+122 / -693]
Western movies are more boring.
I can't understand English

3. [+1531 / -35]
Japanese films make me feel depressed and uncomfortable so I don't like it.

Exactly
Japanese films are too realistic and pessimistic.
Even the comedies
That's why I hardly ever watch Japanese films

4. [+1304 / -13]
The large number of manga live-action adaptations might also be one of the main reasons.

5. [+2719 / -5]
I get what you mean by the voices being too quiet.

46. [+187 / -5]

For the Japanese films and TV films made up till the end of the Showa, compared to the amount of care taken into image quality, the production side didn't put any thought and consideration into the recording and sound.
That's why it's hard to listen to and sometimes distorted.

From an old lady who used to work part-time at a cinema type company.

69. [+555 / -0]
>>5
The voices are quiet but the sound effects are loud so it's hard set the volume.

6. [+1053 / -16]
I don't watch Japanese films unless they're popular.

7. [+181 / -534]
I hate how people who diss Japanese films act like know-it-alls.

22. [+227 / -27]
>>7
Then why don't you name some interesting Japanese films for me?

68. [+133 / -15]
>>22
The Chef Of South Polar

138. [+137 / -22]
>>22
I prefer Western movies. Japanese movies disappoint me most of the time, but "Always Sanchōme no Yūhi" and "The Little House" which I watched the other day, had the feel of good-old-fashioned Japan, which made me think Japanese films can be good too.

210. [+69 / -5]
>>22
There's no point recommending Japanese movies in a dissing thread.

382. [+83 / -24]
>>22
Suteki na Kanashibari was the best

74. [+166 / -13]
>>7
I watch both Japanese and Western films but the movies that make me feel satisfied after watching still tend to be the Western ones.

8. [+1673 / -6]
The voices are too quiet in Japanese films.
Sometimes I can't tell what they're saying.

326. [+59 / -0]
>>8
The sound effects are louder than the talking, I wish they'd do something about it...
Dramas have the same problem too.

9. [+1079 / -12]
When it's a Japanese film, if the setting is weird or unrealistic, or the acting is a bit bad, I get really put off watching, but the same thing doesn't happen when I'm watching Western films. Maybe I can't tolerate it because it's in my native language.

28. [+196 / -12]

I wonder if American people watch movies with "The US president has received a deαth thɾeat"-like stories and find it realistic?

191. [+83 / -0]
>>9
When it's your native language, your standards for realism are higher.

10. [+1019 / -15]
Japanese films nowadays are too cheaply made
The set and costumes are just as bad as TV dramas.

35. [+39 / -2]
>>35
Because it's low budget.

11. [+146 / -432]
*One Cut of the Dead

52. [+396 / -88]
>>11
The representative work of boring Japanese films.

12. [+807 / -22]
I watch Japanese films once in while, and remember random stuff like, 'hey, this actor committed adultery,' etc. w

13. [+634 / -5]
There are very few movie-only actors so it doesn't feel special.

21. [+392 / -7]
>>13
In America, actors are split between movie and TV, is there a clear status difference between them?

14. [+595 / -9]
You can see how low level the CG and special effects make-up is.

15. [+209 / -21]
After watching the movie version of ATARU, I decided I'd never watch a Japanese movie ever again.

16. [+1331 / -13]
There are too many boring movies.

17. [+899 / -5]
For both Japanese anime films and live action adaptations, they always want to randomly add in high school girls...

18. [+458 / -26]
I hate how they always french kiss in Western movies, even in action movies.
But it's mostly Western movies that make me think, "This is a masterpiece!"
There are some interesting Japanese movies too.

19. [+780 / -36]
I lose the urge to watch when it's a Yamazaki Kento type actor.

20. [+583 / -0]
Don't know whether it has something to do with the budget or this age we live in... There are lots of stories about dull everyday life, which might be one of the reasons why Japanese films aren't popular.

23. [+29 / -177]
You're free to dislike Japanese films, but feeling the need to talk about every little thing on Girls Channel shows your bad personality.

24. [+285 / -6]
Might also because they don't spend much time and money on them.

25. [+681 / -12]
I don't like Japanese films too but I always thought it was because the population and market size in Hollywood and Bollywood is on a different scale to Japan.
But I recently realised that even England is making high-quality movies even though their population is smaller than Japan. Although you can argue it's not same because England is where traditional theatre like Shakespeare flourished, I still feel sad knowing that Japanese films are simply low quality.

26. [+764 / -7]
I've gotten a better opinion of Japanese films lately but I don't find them interesting.
They feel like drama specials.

27. [+498 / -9]
The production costs of Hollywood movies is magnitudes higher so it's stunning if you watch it in a cinema, that's why I like them.
It's fine to watch Japanese movies just on TV or DVD.

29. [+59 / -65]
Hmm... To be honest I find most Western films boring too. The probability of finding a good Western film isn't any higher than the probability of finding a good Japanese one.

30. [+370 / -3]
The voices are very quiet in some Western movies too but I guess it doesn't bother people because there are subtitles.

32. [+849 / -1]
The problem where the voices are so quiet you can't hear them
It's especially bad when it's an actor with a deep voice or an elderly person muttering, a lot of the time, I think, "Huh? What did they just say?"
I increase the volume so I can hear
But then the sound effects/background music make me jump because it's too loud
It's quite irritating

34. [+458 / -12]
I watch with my headphones because if I turn up the volume, they suddenly play a loud sound effect, which is bad for my heart
Come to think of it, this never happens with Western films.
They don't have scenes where people whisper-talk.

36. [+93 / -6]
Can't you just put on subtitles?

38. [+191 / -7]
I don't agree with the casting of the manga adaptations so even though I like the manga, I'm don't watch it.
I don't hate Tsuchiya Tao but Tsuchiya Tao isn't the right person to play shoujo manga heroines.

39. [+756 / -20]
Anyway, I don't understand why tickets for Japanese films cost the same as American films.
American films spent so much money on it to give us the full experience.
It's strange that the Japanese films with shoddy content charges the same fee of 1800 yen.
It the same as saying, renting a light motor vehicle will cost the same as renting a Lexus.

40. [+416 / -15]
I've seen many people giving the excuse that Japanese films have no budget but it's a bigger problem than that.
There are heaps of entertaining low-budget Western films.
Unnecessary pauses, too much background music, pointlessly sentimental scenes, boring camera work
Japanese films haven't advanced in decades.

41. [+382 / -4]
They could have just made it a drama special instead, is what I end up thinking.

43. [+78 / -4]
I prefer watching Japanese films at home wearing headphones over watching in a movie theatre. Because, like OP said, it's hard to listen to lol
I didn't like Japanese films before but I'm sick of the over-reactions in Western films, and have come to feel that the tranquility in Japanese films is nice too.

44. [+158 / -9]
There are no directors at Kurosawa Akira's level.
In a past thread about Japanese films being boring, I read that the staff who came after Kurosawa didn't have sufficient training.

62. [+111 / -3]
>>44
Kurosawa Akira was allowed to create the movies he did because of the age he lived in.
The age where movies were the source of entertainment.

After the spread of television, Kurosawa caused quite a bit of trouble and he didn't create any works that were as good as the ones he directed during the golden age.

48. [+315 / -8]
Is it worth it to watch Japanese movies at the cinemas?
Nah, there's no need to watch Japanese movies on the big screen.

49. [+328 / -3]
I want them to stop making anime live action adaptations.
